at a loss

Words are just hard to come by these days. I keep my head down, cross the winter days off the calendar, watch documentaries, shake my head at my broken finger and other miscellaneous ailments that have sprung up, and think of spring.

An affirmation for those of you who might be facing the blues, similarly:

What We Need is Here
- Wendell Berry

Geese appear high over us,
pass, and the sky closes. Abandon,
as in love or sleep, holds
them to their way, clear
in the ancient faith: what we need
is here. And we pray, not
for new earth or heaven, but to be
quiet in heart, and in eye,
clear. What we need is here.

Repeat. Eat sushi and delicious spicy food. Give an unexpected compliment. Do a small favor. Care less about the work. Repeat. Sleep in a bit. Work out hard. Think of words that are happy. Repeat. Fall improbably into love with someone. Listen to music that overwhelms with beauty. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

great words

yesterday, i spent part of the day talking about words over homemade peach italian sodas with super friends. great words make me happy. i love words that make me smile when i say them, or laugh out loud when i hear them. here's a short list of some of my favorite words from yesterday:

sodapop (it should be one word, really)
supernova
whipsmart (noticing a compound word pattern)
griddle
juicer
sweatervest
ranger
healthy snack (a phrase, but oh well)
whole milk (also a phrase)
optimus prime (a transformer, so it probably doesn't count)
smarty

my new favorite word is in this list! can you guess? and what's your current favorite word, gentle reader?
